World Veterinary Day is an annual event that was created and established to promote and highlight the lifesaving work performed by veterinarians around the world. The day was proclaimed in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association, and it is celebrated on the last Saturday of April every year.

In 2021, World Veterinary Day will be celebrated on April 24th, usually, there is a specific theme every year. Last year, in 2019 the theme was announced as ‘Value of Vaccination’.

Though hard to accurately calculate, it is estimated that there are currently 1.8 Million vets worldwide.

More than ever, during the current global SARS CoV-2 pandemic, it is critical for veterinarians around the world to come together to solve our common One Health challenges, to continue to provide high quality educational opportunities for veterinarians and students, to protect animal welfare, and to support each other. The World Veterinary Association (WVA) is an independent international association representing veterinary professionals working in all fields of practice with all species of animals around the world. The WVA’s role is to bring current issues forward to member associations and provide a forum for veterinarians to communicate and achieve consensus on issues that are critical to the profession. I would like to encourage you to reach out and let the WVA know what issues your association is dealing with. Please also consider volunteering some time to provide expert knowledge and support on one of the WVA’s Working Groups. Through collaboration we can work towards enhancing the recognition and perceived value of veterinarians around the world!
