Panam City the glorious past of Bangladesh on
international Day for Monuments and Sites, often known as World Heritage Day, is a “day to celebrate and promote cultural heritage, and an opportunity to raise awareness about its diversity, its relevance, how vulnerable it can be and what the needs and benefits of its conservation are.” On April 18, 1982, at a symposium in Tunisia that was organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a suggestion was proposed by ICOMOS that a global “International Day for Monuments and Sites” should be held to celebrate the diversity of heritage around the world. The ICOMOS Executive Committee approved the day, and they gave suggestions to the National Committees on how to organize it. Following this, the UNESCO General Conference passed a resolution in November 1983 at its 22nd session, which recommended that Member States look into the possibility of declaring an “International Monuments and Sites Day” on April 18 each year.
Each year, ICOMOS comes up with a different theme for the day. ICOMOS National Committees may also come up with themes that are pertinent to their own nations as well. Many different events are held on the day, being organized by ICOMOS International and National Committees, as well as by other organizations. Monuments and heritage sites are visited; completed and in-progress conservation works are stopped at; conferences, lectures, interviews, and roundtable discussions are held; information is shared in newspapers and other forms of media. “World heritage” can be defined as the shared worth of humankind, and today marks a day of solidarity where it is celebrated, and where there is an understanding that the international community is needed to protect and preserve it.
Description : Sonar gaon’s importance in the pre – Muslim period is borne out by its ancient name of Subarnagram ( the golden village ) , from which it is obvious how the Muslim version of the name is derived , as well as by the existence of Langolbandh and Panchamighat , the two traditional holy bathing places of the Hindus , in this tract of land on the west bank of the old Brahmaputra . Sonargaon rose to be the seat of an independent ruler under Ghiyasuddin Bahdur shah , and after his fall it was the head quarters of the eastern province of Bengal under the Tughlaqs till 1338. Sonar gaon emerged as the capital of an independent Sultanate under Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah (1338 – 1349).
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century PanamNagar was developed in a part of medieval Sonargaon . By the second quarter of the fourteenth century Sonargaon from had developed into a commercial metropolis : seafaring boats could easily reach Sonargaon from west Asian and southeast Asian countries . Ibn Battuta describes Sonargaon as an important port city , which had direct commercial relations with countries like China , Indonesia ( Java) and the Maldives . Muslin produced produced in Sonargaon , especially its finest variety called Khasa, had a worldwide reputation . With the loss of political status in the second decade of the seventeenth century when Panam Nagar was established as a trading centre in cotton fabrics, chiefly for the English market . Hindu cloth merchants built their residential houses following colonial style with inspiration derived from European sources.[2] After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and the Muslim-Hindu riot, Panam City has reduced into a vacant community. Today this area is protected under the department of archaeology of Bangladesh. Panam city area was linked with the main city area by three brick bridges – Panam Bridge, Dalalpur Bridge and PanamNagar Bridge – during Mughal period. The bridges are still in use.
Now a days panam city of Sonargaon is a pilgrim place for tourist and visitors from home and abroad with its architectural beauty and glorious heritage. They are attracted by its immense beauty and by the ruins of buildings and relics that date back to the era of Bengal.
